5A Local Opportunities

1.      “Jaguars turn sights on Lot J at stadium for entertainment district”

With the growing success of the Jacksonville Jaguars there is a better opportunity for a fan experience downtown. Restaurants and bars would do well when people come in on the weekends. It would also help out shops downtown that have struggled with lack of business in recent years. The problem is that football season is only a quarter of the year and this new social scene would take up some of the only parking near the stadium. The team would benefit from more people enjoying a full experience before and after the game. The city of Jacksonville has the problem here but many businesses could exploit this opportunity.

2.     “New Setup Allows Shoppers to Make Target Run in their Underwear”

The only grocery seller “Shipt” has its eyes set on doing same-day home deliveries for target shoppers. It will deliver everything from groceries to home goods. This problem is that people currently have to choose between going into a store or waiting a few days for online shipping. Sometimes people have time for neither. These busy people would be the ones with the problem.

3.           “Here’s how to recycle your Gasparilla beads in Tampa”

The Mardi-Gras type event in Tampa, “Gasparilla”, results in millions of beads being thrown to spectators and partiers. They usually are picked up as garbage by the city but now people are thinking about collecting or recycling the beads themselves. This presents a free opportunity to sell the beads and make money. The problem is really the City of Tampa’s problem in cleaning up the city, but really every Gasparilla goer can have this issue.

4.     SI predicts ‘possible backslide’ for Georgia in 2018

After the Falcons lost a devastating Super Bowl in 2017 to the Patriots, Georgia sports fans were hoping for a great season from the Bulldogs and Falcons this year. Both teams made their respective sport playoffs but came to disappointing ends. This was heartbreaking for Georgia sports fans and according to Sports Illustrated the Dawgs will be struggling in the years to come. This is an opportunity for the Braves, Georgia Tech, and maybe if the Atlanta Hawks to take the attention of Georgia sports fans. If they can draw more interest it could lead to some larger crowds in the coming seasons. Bandwagon fans bring money no doubt.

5.     As officials plan Red Line extension, there's still no green to fund it

This 2.3 billion dollar extension would provide necessary transit for the south Chicago areas but is severely over budget. This so-called “transit desert” has deprived some impoverished areas from having downtown job opportunities. This problem is everyone in southside Chicago’s problem but also the city’s as a whole. A cheap uber service or cheap bus system could possibly plug this opportunity. A major Chicago bank offering a loan could also probably make good money on the project and good publicity.

  1. Hi Logan,
I am a cashier at a local Publix here in Gainesville and I now deal with Shipt on a regular basis and I must say, I think home delivery is the future. Right now, it is in its very beginning stages and there are a lot of kinks in the system, but with time, they will all be worked out. For just a small fee, a customer can choose what they and have it delivered to their house within the hour. For it to become more popular though, the customer must see a greater value of having their groceries or goods delivered than the fee it costs them. With time, this fee will go down and I think more customers will be up for the idea of home delivery.
