21A- Reading Reflection #2

"How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big" by Scott Adams

1.     This book was a sort of average man's guide to success. It seems like it was designed for college students or struggling middle aged adults. The advice is presented in a way that is almost like creating a game plan for yourself to be able to pull yourself up by your bootstraps in find success in everyday life. What stood out to me was the book argued that being selfish to an extent is a key to getting your life in order. Everything from ensuring you focus on eating proper foods, sleeping right, managing your money wisely, and keeping yourself happy and full of energy. Adams referenced energy multiple times saying that maintaining hobbies that peak your interest will help you develop new skills and have energy to successfully complete your day.

2.      I think this book connected with class in the manner that it describes a daily outlook on life. ENT3003 is all about seeing and seizing opportunity in everyday life and this book describes a systematic approach to everyday life. Recognizing what you need to work on in yourself is a focus of this book and recognizing what in the world has room to be improved is what we study in class. The book also describes how there is no one approach to "winning" or being successful, just as in entrepreneurship there are many strategies for developing an idea.

3.    An assignment for this class that would relate to this book could be one that requires constructing a daily schedule that designed to fulfill your personal needs first and then help those around you/ your career. This would include time for personal enrichment in a hobby as well as time growing a skill related to your job. If your job is not providing you with satisfaction or energy you need to make time for leisure to regain that morale. This would a be a straightforward assignment that would be very beneficial for someone getting a start in their career.

4.      I think a lot of what you hear about the business world is that it takes countless hours and  extreme effort in your particular position in order to make it a career. People talk about pulling all nighters and having crazy lifestyles that revolve solely around your job. Scott Adams spent 16 years in the business world before he wrote the satirical comic about it, "Dilbert". He describes the idea that focusing on your own health and happiness is another way to achieve success. This is contrary to much of what I have heard about hard work but it makes sense, allowing yourself to be in control of everything outside your job will make you more successful in your job.
